Happy Anniversary Wasp

This month, 46 years ago, The Second Lady of Marvel made her debut. The Wasp, aka Janet Van Dyne, made her first appearance in Tales To Astonish #44. She started out as the love interest to Dr. Henry Pym, The Astonishing Ant-man. When an alien monster killed her father, Vernon Van Dyne, she begged Pym (who was the elder Van Dyne's assistant) to inject her with the "Pym Particles", the substance he invented that gave him his powers to shrink. He agreed and she now had the ability to shrink, grow wings, and fire blasts of energy she called her "Wasp's Sting". Together they defeated the alien and started their career of adventure.

The Wasp (along with Ant-man) became founding members of Marvel's premiere super-team, The Mighty Avengers. Over the years Van Dyne would be one of the Avengers main heroes and on a few occasions be the team's leader and chairwoman.
She also has the distinction of having the largest collections of costumes of any super-hero. Being a woman of great means, Janet has designed many costumes for herself and her outfit could change from issue to issue (especially when drawn by artist George Perez).

Above Perez draws The Wasp in one of her more current outfits. With her is Yellowjacket, one of Henry Pym's later alter-ego's.
The Wasp is one of Marvel's premiere heroes of The Silver Age of Comic Books.

Huckleberry Hero Hump-Day Special

This week I would like to do something different and feature the art of a fan of my Huckleberry Heroes.
Erin Filarowski (also known as CooperGal24 on Flickr) like myself is a member of the Flickr Group "The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera". Through there we met when she contacted me and told me that see was a big fan of Huckleberry Hound. She liked what I did with Huckleberry Heroes and gave me some suggestions for Huck to portray.
Erin is a talented artist herself and taking a cue from yours truly, did some Huckleberry Heroes of her own. Above she drew Huck as another H-B Hero, Hong Kong Phooey.

Here Erin pulled the old switcheroo and drew Hong Kong Phooey as "Huckle Hero", the super-hero that Huck became in a few episodes of the "Yogi's Treasure Hunt" series. I think it's fun to see Huck's trade-mark neck tie on H.K.P.

Above Erin created a new costume for Huckle Hero. I love the color scheme on this, staying true to Huck's blue fur and the use of yellow as highlights. His cape is reminiscent of the one worn by the original Captain Marvel.
Erin has also done some great sketches of the Hanna-Barbera female characters and designed costumes for them. She has also done infant versions of the H-B characters that are creative and cute.

Check out Erin's art on Flickr and devianART.

IT'S TAZ DAY!!!

Back in 1954 (on this date) in the Bugs Bunny Cartoon "Devil May Hare", The Tasmanian Devil made his first appearance and the World of Looney Toons was never the same again.
Taz only appeared five cartoons during The Golden Age, but has gone on to be one of the most popular Cartoon Characters ever.
Above is a painting I did of the "Spinning Stomach".

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAZ!!!

A Huckleberry Hero Hump-Day Special

This week I've decided to do something a little different and show you folks some sketches out of my archives. The three above drawings of Huckleberry Hound were done in December 1977, I was fourteen then. As you can see I've always had a fondness for our blue-furred hero. The sketches are done on old manila drawing paper colored with color pencils and outlined in marker.

I always loved drawing Huck and all his pals.

Happy 75th Donald Duck

It was on this date June 9, 1934, that Donald Duck made his debut in the short "The Wise Little Hen". Due to the popularity of this cartoon, Donald soon was teamed up with Mickey Mouse and Goofy and awarded his own cartoon series not long afterward.
In my opinion the best work done with Donald Duck was the Comic Book stories written and drawn by the Great Carl Barks. His grand adventures in the Four Color Comics (and later his own series) and the comedic Ten-Pagers in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories are some of the best material done for Comics.

Huckleberry Hero Hump-Day

Black Condor
Uncle Sam

Howdy y'all! It's your ol' Buddy Huckleberry Hound back to introduce two new Heroes, this time from the Golden Age of Comics.
Both Super-Heroes that I portray are from the Quality Comics line, the same publisher that gave us Plastic Man.
First I portray their high-flying Hero, The Black Condor. Next I don the red, white and blue suit of the fighting spirit of America, Uncle Sam.
Both Heroes helped The Allies fight the Axis powers during WWII.
